It was incredible to see firsthand one of the biggest displays of sheer biomass on the planet as billions of krill swarmed before my camera in Antarctica’s Southern Ocean. Measuring no bigger than a few centimeters individually, what krill lack in size they make up for in numbers as one of the most abundant species on earth. However, over the last 50 years or so, their once plentiful populations have dropped by an alarming 80%. Their decline is mostly due to climate change and the loss of sea ice, which provides both shelter and sustenance in the form of algae. Without the ice, we have no krill, and the entire polar ecosystem collapses— including all the penguins, seals, and whales that depend on krill to survive. That‘s why @Mitty, @SeaLegacy, and I are thrilled to celebrate the first ever World Krill Day.
