“On the Rocks” / As an artist who works closely with wildlife, I like to create portraits that offer a little insight beyond an animal’s general behavior. When this beautiful sea wolf settled down along the tidal flats, her shoulders rose and fell in a wistful sigh as she rested her chin on a bed of seaweed. When game is scarce, many people have a tendency to sharpen their pitchforks against natural predators like wolves— even when pollution, disease, and development run rampant. In reality, the state of our crumbling ecosystems is a direct result of our own, broken relationship with the living world. Protecting wolves and the forests they roam is the first step to repairing that connection and restoring our planet.
