While these tips help us to better utilize our time, they don’t fix the issues within the education system that cause us to be overworked and to burn out.
A few years ago we were close to striking and “working the rule”, working only our contracted hours. I wanted to stand with my union and this was a tough adjustment. I wish someone would have given me these tips to make it a bit easier.
I tried to lay everything out as best as I could. And I realize that these may not all apply to you. I use a combination of a few or all of these each day to cut back on how much work is left to do after school.
Time management is also needed along with these tips (see past post on that), and is necessary if you want to stop working so much extra.
I cannot tell you of another career that leaves people feeling guilty for NOT working after hours, but you may feel guilty cutting back. It’s okay to feel that guilt. I have felt it and then remind myself that I rather than feeling guilty, I am going to appreciate my ability to put my needs, my health, my family, etc before my job.
Teaching is just that... A JOB.
So I hope this posts helps you reclaim your time and work smarter not harder.
What else helps you cut back? What is something that you can try this week to work a bit less?
