These polychromatic companions (2016.253) are now on view within Gallery 172 as part of the newly opened exhibition, “Chroma: Ancient Sculpture in Color.” The lively nuptial banquet depicted takes place on a lavishly decorated and furnished couch (kline). Two winged Erotes join the festivities and all participants are crowned with ivy leaves and wreaths.⁣ ⁣ Exquisitely detailed, the couple and the gods of love retain much of their original color and gilding. Bright blues, reds, and pinks are seen on the couch; the wings hold some blue; and red can be discerned in the figures’ hair and laurels.
