Located in a small town in the Oregon wine country, the Courtyard House harmonizes with its context by burrowing the house into the land so that it remains unseen from the street. To the west and north, this strategy minimizes the visual and acoustic connections between adjacent structures and increases thermal insulation. As a result, an exterior glass courtyard is carved into the center of the floor plan, to bring nature, light, and air into the heart of the house. Spanning a terrace escarpment, however, the structure emerges from below ground.
