In northern Zanzibar, the Panje Project (@thepanjeproject) teaches local women and girls swimming skills in an effort to reduce high rates of drowning. Full-length swimsuits are provided. In addition to challenging a patriarchal system, the project has created a sustainable cycle by empowering students to teach others.⁣ ⁣ Photographs from 'Finding Freedom in the Water' by Anna Boyiazis (@annaboyiazis), awarded in the 2018 World Press Photo Contest. The series looks at how teaching women a vital skill like swimming can be an important step towards emancipation and gender justice.⁣ ⁣ This project is included in the exhibition ‘Resilience - stories of women inspiring change,' currently on tour in Brazil, Turkey, Bangladesh, and North Macedonia.⁣ ⁣ This exhibition, a collaboration between the World Press Photo Foundation and the Kingdom of the Netherlands, is curated from a selection of stories awarded in the World Press Photo contests from 2000 to 2021.
