It’s difficult being a Coach/Dad... it ain’t for everyone!! But for the dads out there who share the court with their child I recommend this.. I like to connect with my son as his Dad before I go into “Coach mode” and speak life into him as his Father.. tell him how amazing he is, how tough he is, that as his father I expect him to do his best and for him to want to be his best version of himself, that I’m checking out as dad at this moment but remember you are in good hands with your Coach.. because you son have been BLESSED! Your coach is loving man, humbled by life and he understands his assignment! I love you, go hard and have fun!
Why do I do this... because he doesn’t have the same luxury as other kids. He’s a Coaches kid...”Coaches kids” get the worse reps as a result of too much dad showing up on the court instead of the Coach. I try my best to draw a line in the sand so my son knows when dad checked out and when coach has stepped in the room. By doing this it makes it easier on me and him by vocalizing this. I’m not left feeling like I failed to support him and he understands when I’m yelling at him that it’s his coach doing the yelling.. lol! It’s not personal.
Also when we leave the gym... practice is over! We only talk about practice if he wants to talk about!!
