“Every Button” is here (and here’s a story to go with it). This song was written shortly before going on Valley Boy’s first ever tour of the United States. It started simply, me singing and playing guitar and Ian playing drums like we’ve done since we were twelve years old. At the time I was feeling deeply frustrated with myself for not achieving greater musical success. Ian and I were now 30 years old and it felt like we’d done everything we could and still weren’t getting anywhere. Also, our friend and Ian’s housemate was on-again off-again addicted to playing Super Smash Bro’s and I was watching him play it while writing these lyrics. Soon after writing this song, Valley Boy was offered it’s first tour of the United States. Suddenly I had the chance to perform my music to thousands of people across the country who had never heard it before. And, as if fate were winking at me, the song that nearly every new fan said was their favorite was “Every Button”. After that tour, Ian and I spent an ungodly number of hours trying to chase the high of what it felt like to perform this song live and capture it in a recording. We made so many versions and decisions that I think there’s not a millisecond of this recording that I haven’t agonized over, wondering the volume of that one conga hit was too quiet or too loud and if by changing it one more time people would truly be able to enjoy the song.
