For the 10th issue of CYTE Magazin I pulled some of my favorite vintage fashion pieces out of my closet and told the story behind. Here‘s a short, translated version about my Jean-Paul Gaultier coat in English for you: ‚In 1994, after I quit my copywriting job at an advertising agency and didn't really know what I wanted to do next, I thought: "I like Paris so much, I'm going to take a summer course at the Sorbonne." I was very lucky that I was able to exchange my one-room apartment in Wedding for a one-room apartment in Paris, right next to the Bastille. Anne Gelbard totally loved it in Wedding. I totally loved it in Paris. It really was such an "Emily in Paris" apartment. My originally planned six weeks turned into three months, because just as I loved Paris, Anne loved Berlin. So we simply exchanged for longer. In Paris, I discovered a store concept that I had never heard of before, neither in Berlin nor in Minden, my hometown. It was called "Le mouton à cinq pattes". It was a second-hand store selling B-ware or catwalk pieces from designers. Something like that was completely new to me and suddenly real designer things, like this Jean-Paul Gaultier coat, came within my budget as a 23-year-old. I was like OH MY GOD!!!! It was truly a revelation! I had a visit from a German friend at the time, an illustrator. I came back from my lastest haul and screamed: I BOUGHT A REAL GAULTIER FOR 300 MARK! IT'S THE REAL GAULTIER, NOT JUNIOR GAULTIER! And I said that to her at least ten times because I was so excited. She then made a drawing of me at the time.
