Here's the thing- most doctors only run one lab when looking into thyroid imbalance- TSH - but there are other labs that can help you find our what's going on. These include: 🦋TSH- thyroid stimulating hormone is produced in a part of your brain called the pituitary gland. Its job is to act as messager to the thyroid to produce thyroid hormones T3 and T4. 🦋Free T4 & Free T3- T4 and T3 are hormones produced by your thyroid gland and sent into your body to do their jobs. T4 is converted into T3, the active form of the hormone. Testing the free versions of these hormones tell us how much of the hormones are available in the bloodstream for the body to use. 🦋Thyroid antibodies- These are tested to diagnose autoimmune thyroid disease and distinguish it from other forms of thyroid dysfunction. The two thyroid antibody tests that I order are Thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) and Thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb). 🦋Reverse T3- When your body wants to conserve – rather than “burn” – energy, it will divert the active T3 into an inactive “reserve” form. This can happen when you are sick, stressed, or undernourished. If you have optimal levels of TSH and T4 but low T3, often that T3 may be getting stored as reverse t3.
