Did you know Art Spiegelman, the celebrated author of Maus, was one of the creators of the collectable ‘Garbage Pail Kids’ cards? I never knew! In his introduction, which is great and humorous, he says that working for the Toppa corporation was the closest he ever got to the real world. The design for this little art book is incredible. The dust jacket is thin and waxy and actually feels like the original Garbage Pail Kids bubble gum wrapper. When you take the dust jacket off, an illustration of a stick of gum is revealed on the front cover. When you turn it over, the gum is cracked into pieces, reminding one of the hard, cheap gum that the packages used to contain. The book is simple, each page presenting a card from the collection. The book is not filled with text like some other art books, but allows the images to speak for themselves (I mean describing some of these in words would be problematic). They are hilarious, gross and disturbing illustrations of a baby whose design was inspired by the 80s Cabbage Patch Kids craze. It is campy and nostalgic. I keep it out, and friends always have fun looking through it.
