September 2011: I arrived in Paris two days before my first fashion week with a plan to stay six months. As the Globe and Mail’s style reporter, I intended to spend this time meeting designers in their studios; diving deep into museums; and learning the true meaning of terms like savoir-faire and art de vivre. September 2021: My 10th Parisversary and the return of a fashion week as close to normal as the circumstances could permit. For nearly a decade, PFW has been a reviewing bonanza (forever grateful to @nicolephelps and @voguerunway!). Now, through @vernerremsen with my scribekick @nickremsen, PFW is our client. To @serge.carreira, Guillaume, @morandpascal and the @parisfashionweek team: we take immense pride in working with you. In January, ahead of his @azfactory debut, I interviewed Alber Elbaz for Insider, the PFW platform. He told me, “Even if I felt the last few years that I was not in love with fashion, I was totally and always in love with the industry – with designers, with editors, with journalists. And I felt part of the industry, so I wanted to show some solidarity.” Last night, as a celebratory show of homage and inspired creation, the industry delivered heartwarming solidarity right back. And after this week, maybe just maybe, there is a collective feeling of love for fashion once again. Finally, merci to the designers who welcomed us into your studios this season; to the PRs for making this possible; and to everyone else who weighed in on the industry’s future with valuable insight. Whatever is in store, may we all embrace the joie de vivre.
