The teacher told my mother that I was too nice of a boy to grow up ‘that way,’ and she should seek help for me. Hearing this, I'm thinking, ‘do I have a third arm growing someplace? What was the deformity that she saw?’” Although Teryl Lynn’s innocence clouded her teacher’s not-so-subtle insinuations, she recognized that effeminacy made others an easy target of ridicule. “In the neighborhood where I grew up, there were these ‘sissies,’ they were called. I remember throwing rocks and laughing at them. And they'd say, ‘Oh, we're gonna GET you!’ I know what that means now! Sometimes we bully people because we see ourselves reflected in them. I was actually one of them, but I was fighting it.” When a friend put her in makeup and a gown for the first time, a teenage Teryl Lynn stopped resisting her destiny. “I saw myself in the mirror and I started to cry.
