I wrote a musical ! • The very first draft of this was written in a playwright class in high school @joelrking . We had a 10 minute play assignment and I took a stab at writing a rhythmic 10 minute play. 3 years later with the help of a lot of great people I was able to workshop this project on stage! • This process has been such a learning experience for me and I can’t thank everyone enough who helped bring this piece to life. • I love hip-hop, I love rap, and I love theatre. With that my target is to make art for everyone to enjoy and not just theatre lovers. I want something fresh and this is my attempt at that. I want to change the negative stigma in hip-hop that most see by combining it with theatre to show that it’s as powerful in a storytelling element as any other genre. • I didn’t get in to musical theatre the same way a lot of people did and I always say I didn’t know hip-hop could even be on Broadway until my junior year of high school, so I had all these theatrical hip hop pieces that I would write for fun with no hopes of doing anything with them. I am glad that I am able to tell stories with the kind of a music I grew up with and it starts with this ! • I am going to keep writing more and keep growing, but this was a great opportunity and I want to thank @wansaham & Timothy Ellis for giving me the platform, trust, and allowing me to be free with this piece. I can’t wait to write more and get possibly get this piece to in front of more eyes ! • This was also my first time directing a piece and even with a workshop format I had a lot of fun. Thank you to my cast for trusting the process and bearing with me even with those quick changes we would make because my creative mind is always going. • Shout out to the creative team (Young Money) @kammyblake @rezzyreyy @imjohnlumapas @jessiadah for helping bring the music and choreo to life in so many different ways ! Also special shout out to @jassnjazz for coming in on different rehearsals and just being my 3rd eye on the process and the show it’s self.
