“Doing the impossible has no regard for basic human pace.” VA, October ‘17 I am going to miss Virgil’s voice. Since yesterday, I have been listening to my recordings of him; they could play for days. I have gone through endless text messages; he called them “ramblings” and “schpeels.” I have random photos dating back to ’14. The tributes here have been immense — a true testament to the generosity, openness and kindness that made him a remarkable human, combined with his superhuman output and talent for delivering widely desirable, popular concepts in these complex times. Across all our exchanges, there was a part of Virgil that felt off limits; he was protective of his private life and this extended to what he endured over the past few years (my profound sympathies to his family, whom I met on a few occasions). Yet for a while, we shared ideas as friends who drew excitement from similar sources. Spontaneous sparks, amazing vibes. When it came to writing about him, I always wanted to sound balanced. The truth is that I was in awe of him. I think we all were. And will forever be. (Thank you @voguerunway, @nicolephelps for the opportunity to cover Virgil’s collections over so many years; thank you @luke_leitch for the final photo, which I cherish more than ever)
