CW: Transphobia, violence
Sending our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the departed Kimmy, a beloved member of the trans community in Jamaica 🕊️ Her life was senselessly taken away on August 1st, the first day of Jamaica’s Pride festivities (which falls on Jamaica’s Emancipation Day). Let us be clear. Jamaica is not free until all queer and trans Jamaicans are free from violence and discrimination.
Here is a press release from our friends at @transwaveja whom we are currently working closely with out in Kingston.
STATEMENTS MADE BY THE JAMAICA GLEANER FOLLOWING THE GRUESOME KILLINGS OF A TRANSWOMAN AND HER PARTNER ON MAXFIELD AVENUE, KINGSTON.
TransWave Jamaica and the Equality Group wishes to address the damaging, misguided and disingenuous headlines and comments made by the Gleaner surrounding news about the recent killing of two members from the LGBT community. In a release made by the Gleaner on Monday, August 1, 2022, instances of transphobia were seen whereas the misgendering of a transwoman was done to glamourize the incident and steer public ridicule by posting a picture of the deceased being fully affirmed in feminine clothing without acknowledging her gender identity. This was further supported by a follow up article which also made no attempt to acknowledge who she was or respect her identity or use her pronouns, which further highlights the insensitivity of some media houses in terms of accurately reporting on issues affecting the LGBT community. This is not okay.
