What are the three things that are consistently zapping our energy?
This is the first question I was asked, when guesting on the The Dhru Purohit Podcast.
My first thought was, “you’re only going to limit me to three things?”
But sugar, sitting and screens are definitely at the top of the list!
Sugar 🍬
Even those that would consider themselves “healthy”, they are still consuming a large amount of sugar. I was buying a snack today at the airport and a top “health” brand’s protein bar had 20 GRAMS of added sugar, and over 40 grams of carbs. Not so healthy. About 70% of our diets are processed and sugar is a main ingredient in processed foods.
So instead of going for the granola bar for the afternoon pick me up, I suggest a snack that is high in protein, fat and fiber, such as some gluten-free avocado toast, or a handful of raw nuts and seeds.
Sitting 🪑
We sit on average 11 hours a day. And sitting is fine and unavoidable in many cases, but it’s important that we counteract it with regular vigorous movement. You will feel happier, more energized, have better digestion when you get in at least 20-30 minutes of movement each day.
Screens 📱
Technology is the future and it has amazing benefits but it’s depleting our mental health and causing anxiety, depression and insomnia. This doesn’t mean you should throw out your phone, but setting limits is essential to keep tech from being toxic. Having an hour before bed where you’re not looking at screens or setting a couple hours on the weekend when you don’t have your phone with you is a great place to start.
