CALCIUM:
Remember those nutrient needs I talked about when focusing on foods to offer your little ones, well here’s a breakdown of what and how-starting with calcium.
First and foremost, if you’re breast feeding often, most likely your baby is meeting their daily calcium needs. Breast milk has less calcium than cow’s milk, but the bioavailability is greater than cow’s milk. Formula on the other hand is fortified with calcium. So as your baby consumes less milk and or weans completely, offering dietary sources of this nutrient become more vital.
Children ages 1-3 require 700mg per day and the needs of babies under 1 will be met through breast milk or formula.
I suggest not getting hung up on exact amounts, just offer a variety of whole real foods that are nutrient dense. It’s key to remember that little kids & babies have little appetites/bellies-fill em up with the good stuff, so they can thrive!
