Part 2 of the New Year refresher on basic banking etiquette on Wall Street, so you can stay ahead of your peers! 1. Check formatting and page numbers. Professional presentation matters. 2. Avoid slang or emojis in emails. Keep tone polished and professional at all times. 3. Respond promptly. Even a brief “confirming receipt” acknowledgment shows reliability. Try to respond within 20 minutes for every email. 4. When emailing a client externally, as a junior banker you should always double check with senior members of your team before replying. Often more senior members will reply directly to c-suite executives rather than analysts. 5. Always join calls early and mute when not speaking. Be ready before senior bankers or clients log in, and prevent background noise during meetings (also be sure you know whether or not you should be on camera if the meeting is a Zoom). 6. Take notes on calls always and circulate to the full team right after. 7. Do your homework before asking for help. It’s okay to ask questions, but make sure you have asked other team members, googled and tried yourself, or looked around for a precedent before asking for help on something you could have solved by yourself (resourcefulness is key!) 8. Remember to breathe and stay calm under pressure. Maintain composure and positive attitude during long working hours will make you have a lasting positive impression on your peers.
