Here’s a quick bts peak at mine and @nollyggd’s drum tracking process. We never track full songs start to finish. Rather, we break each song down by sections and record multiple takes of each. We do this so we have options for each section (as I quite like to try out different variations here and there, and many times comp performances together to get the coolest version), so we can make sure we’re maintaining perfect tuning (to the best of our abilities) throughout each song, and mainly because all of these songs are really challenging, and it’s nice to break them down,
so as I get through each section, I’m amassing small victories, eventually leading to a massive victory in completion of the full song. Does that make sense? Maybe you do the exact same thing and completely understand, maybe not. It’s not the “right” way to do it, or the “only” way to do it, but it’s the way that works for me and Nolly, and if you struggle at all with studio recordings, this could be a method you can try if you’ve never done so before. It’s never easy, but it builds confidence as you go, gives you a chance to tackle small bits at a time without feeling overwhelmed, and ensures that your drums and the performances are going to sound good, and in tune. I can’t speak for anyone else in the band, but as I listen to the current mixes Nolly is working on, I can personally say these are my favorite drumming performances on any Periphery album, and they’re by far the BEST sounding. I’m excited for you to hear them! Until then, here’s one of probably five takes of this same section that @joe_ggd caught on camera during our sessions. Comment below with questions or let me know whatcha think! #p5 #thanksnobuo
