Thanks to Heidi Moss Erickson’s INCREDIBLE “Singing in the Brain: Breath” course I took over the weekend** I spent time today with the ridiculous but educational “snowman challenge.” I have absolutely no idea how or why this trend started (apparently it was a hit in 2020) but you'll see the task is to sing an insanely long phrase of this Sia song in one breath. Sia very clearly does not sing all of this in one breath in her recording, but I now join the ranks of people on the internet who can do it 😆 I did not succeed on my first try, but I troubleshot via monitoring dynamic level, aspirate consonants, clarity vs. breathiness in the tone, and of course the amount and quality of the breath I took to start.
See if you can do it too and let me know how you managed it! And/or enjoy a fun and fascinating rabbit hole to go down by doing an internet search for "snowman challenge"
To my voice teachers friends: we know it’s not advisable to sing below REL (resting expiratory level) but at this low volume and low pitch range I figured it was an acceptable risk to take in pursuit of completing the challenge :)
