Within the the exhibition "La Dame à la Licorne, médiévale et si contemporaine" and the exceptional loan of the eponymous tapestries from the Cluny Museum: "Monument à la Licorne", cur. by Emmanuelle Luciani with: Jean-Marie Appriou, Southway Studio (Bella Hunt & Ddc, Jenna Kaës). At the invitation of the Musée des Abattoirs/Frac Occitanie in Toulouse and its director Annabelle Ténèze, Southway Studio created the installation of the Unicorn Monument within the exhibition "La Dame à la Licorne, médiévale et si contemporaine". The whole is a portal that transcends time, and gives to see an alternative reality where medieval forms and motifs merge with modernity, as if the visual universe of the first Renaissance had not ceased to exist. It is a polyphony and a visual narrative, where formal references meet, from Bella Hunt & Ddc's coats of arms to Jean-Marie Appriou's powerful metal-armored stallion's head through Jenna Kaës' banners, in the manner of an opera, where individuality and collective merge to create a total work of art. The rediscovery of the "Lady of the Unicorn" tapestry cycle coincides with the birth of the troubadour style in the early 19th century. It was at this key moment of historical revival and the emergence of heritage consciousness in France that the "Lady of the Unicorn" became a monument, according to the values defined by Alois Riegl in "The Modern Cult of bMonuments", that is to say, a unifying work. One of its emblematic subjects, the unicorn, has become a subconscious figure, haunting the collective imagination, from specialists to the general public. A creature of the medieval bestiary, its retinal reign extends to the greatest number of people, thanks to heraldry, fantasy literature and children's toys. Both specter and muse, the unicorn inspires Southway Studio for its installation, which unfolds under the appearance of a large ceremonial room. From 10/30/2021 to 01/16/2022.
