I'm a bit of a slow thinker, preferring the dust to settle before I jump in to writing. I knew I wanted to write a new chapter of my book to mark a million copies sold. I felt like I had watched a mass movement unfurl since 2017. But I wasn't sure what the writing would be. Then I read that Rhian Graham, one of the four people who were on trial for pulling down the statue of a slave trader in Bristol, had mentioned reading Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race in court. I knew I had to meet her. There had been so much writing about the Colston Four and their court case, but I hadn't yet read the piece that tried to contextualise the decades of protests against the statue in the city, or tried to capture the feeling of the black lives matter march on the day. I took myself on a reporting trip to Bristol to interview her and walk the route of the march. By the time I met Rhian, she and her co-defendants had been cleared of all charges. I wanted to get a feel for the sights, smells and sounds of the day. The kind people at Bristol's M Shed Museum allowed me to view the perfectly preserved placards from the protest, as well as the statue itself. These are the snaps I took, to jog my memory while writing.
