I just added some new prints to my website so check them out! Link in bio
Anyways...
Here’s 5 things I’ve learned while working on my seascape photography:
1. Timing is everything: With seascapes, the motion of the waves dictates so much of your photo. Knowing the effects of shutter speed on waves is key to improving your seascapes. Think .5”, 4” or 1/1000 depending on the style.
2. Filters make a huge difference: in order to get that smooth shutter speed you need to use an ND filter to drag that shutter. Second is CPL (polarizer). A polarizer reduces reflections in the water. However, if you shoot sunset, you may not want a cpl because it will reduce the reflections of the sky in the water.
3. Get familiar with your tripod: knowing how your tripod works really well is essential to keeping your gear safe and setting up your shots efficiently.
4. Know the tides: especially here in california, the best time to shoot in most places is low tide. This is because the water drains from the coast exposing all sorts of rocks, tide pools and sea stacks that add lots of dimension to your shots.
5. Check the clouds: with seascapes (and most landscapes in general) cloud cover makes the photo more interesting. Most weather apps have a percent cloud cover to check. I prefer to use accuweather, which has hourly cloud cover, and check for between 30-70% cover for best chance of success.
