2022 was a good year for us. As we reflect on the last twelve months, it becomes clear that setting an intention does pay off. Between our success in highlighting the true heritage story behind the Ecuadorian toquilla hat (often called the Panama Hat), a special meeting with former President Barack Obama, and a Giving Tuesday Partnership with Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, we’re feeling pretty lucky. Here’s a look at our three top moments of 2022. A Meeting with Barack Obama: On the heels of our trip to Ecuador, we participated in L’attitude in San Diego, a conference dedicated to celebrating Latin American changemakers. There, we had the opportunity to meet and speak with former President Barack Obama, who already knew of the Panama* Hat’s Ecuadorian origin story. The Story of a Hat: Our first-ever product, the Panama Hat*, is an emblem of Ecuadorian history. Earlier this year, we set out to highlight the true story behind this piece. Woven by generations of skilled artisans, the Panama* Hat is actually not at all from Panama. It originated on the coast of Ecuador, where we were able to bring our friend and activist Nathalie Kelly. There, we witnessed the community and love behind this treasure, and continued our mission to change the name of the Panama* Hat. A Partnership with Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex: At Cuyana, our mission has always been to empower women by providing them with fewer, better pieces that simplify their lives. For Giving Tuesday this year, we wanted to establish a partnership with an organization that helped us to extend this mission to women seeking new professional endeavors. In partnership with Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, we were able to partner with Smart Works, a UK-based organization dedicated to supporting women professionally. Together, we donated 500 of our Classic Structured Totes to the organization, ensuring we are able to help women reach their highest potential everywhere.
