HOW TO GROW INNER STRENGTH •
-
The episode of the Huberman Lab podcast out now is with the one and only @davidgoggins and it’s a discussion unlike any other he has held publicly.
-
David is often known for his ceaseless drive and pushing himself, the videos of him running, and indeed, he has become synonymous with overcoming any odds.
-
On the Huberman Lab podcast, we get into the mechanisms of brain changes that occur when we push ourselves to do things that we do not want to do, but that grow us in adaptive ways. And the link of all this to the will to live, and possibly even to longevity.
-
Sometimes the things we push ourselves on enhance our career or athletic ability or relationships, but sometimes it’s the mere action of pushing ourselves *to do things that we don’t want to do* that most grows our self perception. In other words, the work becomes the goal, and we become stronger by virtue of it.
-
As David points out, it’s a difficult concept to internalize at first because people are so used to checking off boxes and to-do lists. But there’s a whole other kingdom of growing yourself. David explains.
-
The episode gets into all the details of how to strengthen your mind, but as the slide above shows, it really consists of three critical things. There has to be resistance toward the effort, the effort has to be daily, and you actually have to do it. Forget motivation, inspiration, etc. this is what David is referring to when he says “embrace your darkness and embrace the suck, and just do!”.
-
It’s an extremely raw and honest conversation that anyone listening is sure to grow from, but ultimately it’s not about just listening it’s about doing. So figure out what you want to do least and as hardest for you and do it every day.
