Fatima and her son prepare a fishing net on a boat in Khor Omeira bay, Yemen, on 12 February 2020.
The conflict in Yemen—between the Houthi armed movement and a Saudi Arabian-led coalition—dates from 2014, and has resulted in what UNICEF has termed the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. Conditions of near-famine, economic collapse, and deteriorating basic services continue to worsen. In 2020, the unemployment rate in Yemen was 13.8% higher for women. Although her village was devastated by armed conflict, Fatima returned to make a living from fishing to provide for her nine children.
‘Yemen: Hunger, Another War Wound‘ by Pablo Tosco (@pavlobski) was awarded in the 2021 World Press Photo Contest and is included in the exhibition ‘Resilience - stories of women inspiring change,' currently on tour in Brazil, Turkey, Bangladesh, and North Macedonia.
This exhibition, a collaboration between the World Press Photo Foundation and the Kingdom of the Netherlands, is curated from a selection of stories awarded in the World Press Photo contests from 2000 to 2021. These stories highlight the resilience and challenges of women, girls and communities around the world and showcase a myriad of women's points of views on global issues, celebrations, and traditions.
