excerpts of "tankou melodi" (2020) bibliographic references & sources of inspiration: o1. 2019-2020 glowziesque collage explorations o2. @dakamomo 's use of space & colors within their visual explorations - Monica & Morina's craft will always be a source of inspiration as well as a bibliographic reference in the collage explorations i undertake as they were the ones who initiated me to this fabulous artistic realm. o3. luck this piece is composed of 18 collages through which i aimed to make the non-linear and multiple pasts, presents and futures of Haitian people interact with one another in a "melodious" manner. the title of the piece - on top of mirroring my eagerness to visually render my refusal to consider time as a linear entity - was also a "clin d’oeil" to one of my favourite tracks by the Haitian singer Emeline Michel titled "tankou melodi". (1) the first image depicts my mother at the tender age of 22 years-old. she is dressed with a black and white picture showing members of La Brigade Louverture Mahottières circa May 1946 - a group of Haitian scouts who documented their outings - resting. (2) the second image depicts three Haitian people who were born on July 13th: myself at the tender age of 8-9 years old, the Haitian general Nemours as well as the mother of my mother’s godmother - an elder my mom loved dearly. the archives used in this piece were retrieved from my family archive books, and from the Centre International de Documentation et d’Information Haïtienne, Caribéenne et Afro-Canadienne ( @cidihca ).
