Whether you observe today or you don’t, we hope that today was a day of family, fun, and good food for you all. Or maybe even just a good day of rest, that’s great too. We never want to be dissonant in that for so many Native Americans, today is a day of mourning. A day to commemorate their ancestors who were slaughtered by European colonizers. Personally, we cannot take a bite without acknowledging that the origin of today is not one to be celebrated. However, we’re also aware that when everyone has a day off, especially for our people, fellowship and good food will ensue. And that’s okay, but let’s make sure we do so under the right pretenses.
