“I am a burns survivor, and my scars are nothing to be ashamed of.” - Tulsi, Changing Faces ambassador.
“Words matter and positive representation matters, otherwise this outdated trope that scars and other visible differences make someone inherently ‘bad’, ‘evil’ or ‘shameful’ will continue.”
We were disappointed and shocked to see scars described as “marks of shame” on the popular @BBCTwo quiz show #OnlyConnect recently.
Having a scar is nothing to be ashamed of. Many people might acquire one in their lifetime, for many reasons.
What is a shame is that as a society, we’re still perpetuating the myth that there is something wrong or problematic with visible differences like scars.
Words matter. We hope that as an inclusive organisation, the #BBC will step up and commit to learning more about how to better represent those with visible differences.
Will you help us spread the word? Please like and share our posts, or share your own #NoShame photos.
