Last night as I walked the fields, barely a bloom was open. Yet this morning the colors are starting to gradually stretch out and awaken. Not surprisingly, Linda's Baby, pictured here, is one of our first to open and say hello. Many will tell you to cut flowers on a slant because more water can enter the stem. While that is helpful for dahlias because the slice is a little broader than just a direct cut, it is only a minor difference. That is because dahlias are hollow in the stem. So there isn't a lot more surface area to take in water with a diagonal cut. What is useful for dahlias is to put the stems in the most water possible because they drink through the outer layers of the stem. Check them often for water evaporation and add more so they stay well hydrated and happy! Learn more about dahlias in our full day workshop on September 17. Sorry that October 2 is sold out. Thank you to those who have signed up!
