Ok hear me out:
How the heck do girraffes regulate blood flow in their bodies?
I mean a 17 foot animal with 6 foot necks? It makes no sense physiologically.
As it turns out, giraffes are a marvel of the cardiovascular world.
Their heart literally defies gravity by sending blood up a human sized artery from the heart to the head. Having extra large left heart muscles, high blood pressure and a muscular jugular, allow them to do force blood flow in a certain direction.
To counteract the side effects of forcing blood upwards, the right side of the heart only pumps blood a short distance. This balances the blood flow.
In addition, its legs have thick vein walls to deal with the blood pressure and stop blood pooling at its feet.
To help out even more, the blood vessels will expand and contract to control blood flow within the body, a skill most useful to stop dizziness when they bend down for food.
And this is just a few of the interesting things about these awesome animals.
