Portraiture can be very vulnerable and it’s not always easy for someone to let their guard down to a stranger. Frank Ghery is a powerful man who demands respect. He didn’t shy away from telling me how Richard Avedon and Irvin Penn, two of my heroes, had taken his portrait. It was his way of unnerving the young unknown photographer that I was to him. With this last minute display of his power, he let go just enough to let me guide him through our five minute portrait session together. Weeks later after this photograph was published in the Wall Street Journal, his office reached out to me and asked if he could use my photography as his official portrait.
