Today is the 51st anniversary of the #26thAmendment which lowered the voting age from 21 to 16. This historic change allowed more young people to make their voices heard at the ballot box. We are still working to achieve the promise of the 26th Amendment by tearing down the many barriers young people face when voting. This includes fighting for pre-registration for 16 & 17-year-olds. We are also following the lead of organizations like @nextuporegon that are working to lower the voting age. In 2019, they proposed The Our Future Our Vote Act, which sought to change the Oregon constitution to allow 16-year-olds to vote. While it failed during that legislative session, they are continuing to work with @vote16usa, and engaging their community in dialogue around this important voting rights issue.
