With over 73 miles of rugged coastline, Olympic National Park is home to some of the most beautiful natural beaches in the world. However, the highlight is not the sandy shores, but rather the stunning geology of the sea stacks that hug the coast. The Olympic coast was originally made up of 2 types of rock: mudstone and volcanic/marine sedimentary rock. Together, they lived hand in hand, in what is called the Hoh Rock Assemblage. This formation looked like cookie dough, with mudstone being the batter and the sedimentary rocks as the chocolate chips. Over time, as the water level dropped and the force of the waves took its toll, the softer mudstone slowly washed away while the volcanic rock remained. What’s left over is towering cliffs of mudstone with volcanic sea stacks bursting out of the water.
