The lighthouses on Lighthouse Island in Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge have withstood a 7.3 earthquake, made it through the Civil War and survived countless storms and hurricanes. 🌀 When Lighthouse keepers and their families lived on this island, 6 miles from anyone else, they endured their own hardships- including untimely deaths and unexplained robbery. There are only three places where two lighthouses stand side by side. The first light wasn’t tall enough to alert ships in time, so the second lighthouse was commissioned just a few years later. Six times a year, USFWS unlocks the lighthouses so people can see them up close. After a presentation, we take the boat through the estuary to lighthouse island. And we have three trips this Spring!
