This is what reparations look like! In a unanimous and historic decision, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to return Bruce’s Beach back to the descendants of Charles and Willa Bruce, who purchased the land in 1912, then stolen by the city a decade after. After a long fight and getting their land back, with good hearts, the descendants are choosing to still share their land with the broader community and will rent their property to the city for communal use. But this is about more than just money—it’s about power and the years of generational wealth and land that was stolen from Black communities. Now, the Bruce family has reclaimed their power and can rebuild, showing us how we can move forward toward justice. Big shout out to the local activists and grassroots organizations, such as the organization @justiceforbrucesbeach, who had been organizing and fighting for the return of the land to the rightful owners. While we cannot rewrite the past, we can create a reparative and equitable future for Black communities going forward—and this is just one step in that direction.
