This is my first time reading Ann Quin. Born in Brighton, England in 1938, Quin was a post-war avant-garde writer, known for her experimental style. It's sort of a dark, mid 20th century, working class gritty Virginia Woolf. The novel Berg absolutely stinks of the sea. There's an attention to sordid details that makes the book feel grimy in your hands. Every time I opened the book, the sound of gull and waves crashing came out from the pages. I thought it might be a dense read, but after you get the swing of her language after a page or two, it's an addictive one. The plot centers around a man who goes to a sea-side town to murder his father who abandoned him and his mother as a child. He moves into a room next to his boozing father, who lives with a ventriloquist puppet and his younger lover. A mix between Graham Greene's Brighton Rock and Virginia Woolf's the Waves. A glorious thing. In 1973 Quin walked into the sea off Brighton's Palace Pier and drowned herself. Her work fell into obscurity for a time. So it is amazing to have all her works now back in print. . . . #bookstagram #bookreview #bookrecommendations #booklover #igreads #annquin
