I spent two weeks just taking photographs on the beach of Odessa, getting up at 7 am, finishing at 9 pm. Ukrainians are very loyal to Odessa as a holiday destination, and many described their annual pilgrimage there, sometimes via a 12–hour bus journey, having saved up all year for the trip. The Russian invasion had begun in 2014, and by 2017 over 2.5 million people had been displaced. [One day], two massive military helicopters flew over the beach. For a few seconds the entire beach, thousands of holidaymakers, went completely silent as everyone stopped and looked up. But the very second the helicopters passed overhead, everyone just continued what they were doing as if it was nothing. A perfect example of the Ukrainian mindset: Despite the invasion and all of its effects, life carried on, and the country’s resilient people continued to seek happiness—as they will do again when the war ends. Home is a feeling. It took me until my 50s to find that feeling, but I found it in Ukraine. These are my people, and they always will be.”
