Nora starts solids:
We are one month into Nora starting solids and I thought I would share her progress! We started when she met most signs of readiness, she was 6.5 months old. Her first food didn’t actually get planned, we were having lamb chops for dinner and decided to make one for her, she loved her chop pop! But when I officially sat her in the high chair for a meal, she was so NOT interested, barely any food made it into her mouth. This type of reaction to foods lasted about two weeks and only now she is figuring out some coordinated chews. This is very normal, many babies take a bit of time to figure out what something other than breast milk or formula feels like in their mouth. Not much makes it in baby’s mouth/belly in those first few months of solids, so here are a few tips to keep ya going! And remember every baby is different!
1. Start slow. I offer a small amount, around 1 or 2 TBS
2. Focus on nutrient dense foods (variety of veg, meats, textures if you are doing BLW, temperatures) make sure to offer Iron rich foods twice a week
3. We do combo feeding, purée & BLW. The key to doing purée is to play spoon tag and offer pre loaded spoons. I don’t not put the spoon in her mouth, she does, which means she is in control!
4. Add healthy fats!! Roast veg in oils like avocado or olive, then purée in bone broth. Or simple drizzle onto steamed veg.
5. Offer small sips of filtered water in an open cup during meals. This helps with constipation and moving any leftover food in the moth down.
6. It is perfectly fine to offer a combo of foods that are low allergens at the same time. Just as long as your baby is digesting well. With the top 9 allergens those should be served individually.
