Yesterday I had the pleasure of speaking at the @nycpride rally. On my way to NYC, I got the news of Roe V Wade being overturned. I didn’t write my speech on this topic, but I didn’t have to. Disabled people already lacked fundamental rights surrounding bodily autonomy— this just made it a lot harder. My speech as a trans-masc disabled person, was a call to action for the LGBTQIA+ community to stand up for their queer disabled siblings. Disability Pride month and the 32nd anniversary of the ADA are in July and I want to see massive recognition and real change. Disabled people still do not have marriage rights. Disabled people are still legally allowed to be sterilized. Disabled people can lose their life-saving benefits due to having a child. Disabled people are 3x more likely to experience sexual assault. And we could go on forever and ever. We’ve just barely scratched the surface. Bodily autonomy has always been the foundation of the disability rights movement. I ended my speech with this: “With over 300 anti-LGBTQIA+ bills introduced across America this year, And now Roe v Wade being overturned, it is imperative we recognize the queer disabled Americans who will suffer greatly from this-- Your queer family. We must act now. And with that, I will say: The disabled revolution is long overdue.”
