To protect biodiversity, we need Indigenous land management.
This week, nearly every country in the world met in Montreal, Canada, for a climate conference: COP15. Also known as the UN Biodiversity Conference, it centers on a critical issue: protecting nature. The conference seeks to set new global conservation goals amid a failure to reach any of those previously set.
This time, the plan includes protecting 30% of the world’s land and water by 2030. In order to succeed, the targets must recognize the critical role of Indigenous people—who currently safeguard 80% of the world’s biodiversity.
For The Frontline, associate editor @mgregory7 asks Aboriginal Australians what they hope to see for the future of biodiversity conservation. Head to the link in our bio for the full story.
