Next-door by @brookedidonato “This picture is a self-portrait made at my childhood home in Ohio during a visit in 2014. Home is often thought of as a place of comfort, and this is one of the first pictures I made questioning that notion—depicting how a home can also be a place of confusion and turbulence. I asked my dad to help me with the picture as I was working with a 10-second timer. I was hanging out of the window, and he was standing outside monitoring the camera making sure I was in the frame. The next-door neighbors came outside and asked "Is everything okay?" I think he was a bit embarrassed at the time although he is quite used to this type of reaction now. I remember him shouting back to them "She lives in New York!" as if that in itself would explain the oddity of the scene. The title "Next-door" was inspired by this interaction.”
