At just 27 years old, Ashton Sanders has some pretty big roles under his belt. Recognised for his heart-breaking performance as teenage Chiron in the Academy Award winning Moonlinght, he has tackled issues of race relations and systemic injustice in films such as Native Son and All Day and a Night, and shone a light on the enigmatic Black Panther movement in 2021’s Judas and the Black Messiah.
Now, bolstering an already electrifying filmography, he has returned to the big screen as Bobby Brown in the Whitney Houston biopic, I Wanna Dance With Somebody: “I didn’t want to show just a negative interpretation of this man and his love of this woman because that is simply not all it was,” Sanders tells Glass Man in reflection of his latest role. Appearing alongside the likes of Naomi Ackie (Houston), we asked how the actors approached the tumultuous relationship that occurred between the two artists: “Like anything else that is sensitive, we were cautious and focused on immersing ourselves in the characters completely.”
Already, 2023 is looking like yet another promising year for the actor turned fashion-trailblazer, one in which will surely ensure his future as one of the most promising young talents of a new generation.
