This race is a disappointment for me as an athlete, but a great victory as a person. I walked into Trient (87 miles) ready to quit. I told @jordanrfpr, @m.c.palmer and @rachelraedrake I had nothing left and couldn’t see any way I could make it over two more major climbs and 20 miles, and while they listened they didn’t give voice to my doubts. I had @julien_chorier’s words from a few miles before ringing in my ears (“It doesn’t matter how slow you do it. We must go to Chamonix!”) and @rodfarvard’s encouragement (“Let’s work together.”) and @davidlaney12’s offerings (“Want me to walk in with you to Trient?”). Too many people caring not about my finishing position but about me living up to my side of the bargain. Jordan convinced me to take a few minutes to sleep, and if I wanted to quit after that I could, but when I awoke I was ready to start again. No more excuses. I made my way around the mountain and finished UTMB and I’m mighty proud of that.
