Last night, I had the honor of conducting an original piece titled “As We Are,” composed by New Music Ensemble members Holden Magee @holdenreidmagee . This piece portrays a storm is about to come, people have no choice but to face it. I felt a deep resonance with this piece when I first heard it. By facing the whirlpool of life and the untamed energy of the unknown, I’m standing still in the storm, hacking the unknown. When confronted with the gravity of life, it is what it is, but we must still face it. Recently, I read a book by Joe Hisaishi, where he mentioned that when he conducts a concert, even if it doesn’t match the score precisely, it succeeds as long as it captures the vibe of the moment. He emphasized the importance of practicing the ability to sense and capture the vibe as we step on stage. Inspired by his words, I tried to apply this approach, and it truly helped me. Taking a moment to sense the vibe before the show starts not only calms me but also prepares me for the unexpected. Performances often involve surprises, and no performance aligns perfectly with score. However, when I focus on the spirit of the piece and connect with vibe, the so-called “mistakes” don’t detract from the success of the performance. This was my first time conducting a large ensemble in front of a big audience, a chance I couldn’t have imagined six months ago. It has been an incredible journey to work and grow alongside the young and kind spirits of NME. Supporting one another, we created a shared space together, which is the true essence of music. Let’s embrace the gravity of life, regardless of its challenges or comforts. 2024.12.12 昨晚指挥了New Music Ensemble成员原创曲目《As We Are》。这首曲子描绘了风暴来临时,人们没有选择,只有勇敢面对。第一次听到这首曲子就非常有共鸣,面对人生的漩涡,席卷而来的未知力量,而我在风暴里站直躯体,把未知劈成两半。When confronted with the gravity of life, it is what it is, but we must still face it. 最近在读久石让的书,提到了指挥一场表演时,哪怕节奏和谱子并不完全一致,但和当下的气氛搭上了,这场演出就已经成功了。所以他说需要不断磨炼自己的感力,培养出站上舞台的=瞬间就掌握气氛的能力。大师不愧是大师,他这番话真有效果。并且尝试捕捉气氛的一瞬间,能让自己原本紧张的心情冷静下来。指挥表演的过程会有很多突发情况,这场也和谱子并不完全一致,但我关注在气氛和想传达的精神上,那些错误其实也并不能妨碍它成为一场成功的表演。 这是我第一次公开指挥大团,半年前完全没有想过会拥有这样的机会。Let’s embrace the gravity of life, regardless of its challenges or comfort.
