I finally booked a scripted TV series as full time DP! It’s been a very long, hard road, & I’m proud to say I wrapped my 1st full episode of television. I am overjoyed to be working with a crew of this caliber & eternally grateful to Michael Robin & Kati Johnston @katimjo for this opportunity. I am alternating DP on East New York, a new series for Warner Brothers, airing on CBS & ParamountPlus beginning October 2. Cliff Charles @thepeoplesdp shot the pilot & I'm thrilled to have such a compatible, collaborative alternating DP partner, @zeusmorand I'll be posting more about the show, but for now I celebrate this milestone & hope to offer some words of inspiration about not giving up on your dreams. A lot of successful people will tell you that you have to hear a lot of "no's" before you get to yes, & I'll admit that catch 22 of "you don't get to shoot TV until you've shot TV" was especially tough to overcome. I could say a lot about the narrow ways many people judge "experience" in this business... It’s been my goal to shoot a series for 8+ yrs & it's taken a lot of resolve and perseverance to get here. I've faced down plenty of self-doubt and questioning: "at what point do I concede that this isn't working? How long do I keep banging my head against this ceiling?" My last year in indie film was incredibly rough and heart-breaking. I prepped four (union) features in a row that I did not end up shooting for various reasons. The pain of these sequential experiences served to strengthen my resolve that it was damn well time I land a series. So here I finally am, full of joy & gratitude after one of the darkest periods of my career. And I’ll admit I waited to make an announcement until I survived my first episode with my job intact. (Since that’s far from a given in this business...) Thank you to everyone who's ever let me know that they believed in me. It's the only thing that kept me going all this time. I've always been inspired by a quote in the email signature of a producer I admire, Romell Foster-Owens @romellfo that says "if you don't get out of line, your turn will come." My dreams are finally coming true & yours can too. Just keep believing in yourself.
