This morning, February 13th amidst the snow was the New York City Ballet’s Annual Luncheon. @New York City Ballet This year’s program If the Shoe Fits...Dance In it, showcased the significance of shoes at NYCB-from pointe shoes to tap toes to sneakers highlighting the important role shoes can play in shaping choreography and a dancer’s artistry. NYCB Board Member Donya Archer Boomer moderated the panel discussion and was joined by former NYCB Dancer and School of American Ballet (SAB) Faculty Member Katrina Killian, NYCB Artistic Advisor and Resident Choreographer Justin Peck, and NYCB Associate Artistic Director Wendy Whelan. The best part of the program was the improvisational choreography by Justin Peck showcasing each dancer in the specific type of shoe they were wearing which ranged from sneakers to pointe shoes. It turns out 6,000 pairs of pointe shoes are used in one year. Each shoe costs $130 a pair. NYCB provides as many shoes as needed to their dancers. A dancer tends to go through one pair of shoes a day. The luncheon which was attended by more than 400 guests raised more than $700,000 for the Company. The sponsor of the luncheon was Freed of London, who is also the maker of the shoes New York City Ballet uses. Guests were asked to arrive in their best shoes which was a bit challenging due to the weather, but every woman seemed to change by the time she made it to the table. I was happy to see Fe Fendi and Paola arriving dressed beautifully. I had just seen Fe Fendi yesterday outside of the Carolina Herrera Show. Also to my delight I saw author Maureen Footer @maureenfooter who is working on her new book on the choreographer Buddy Bradley. I rejoiced over a peplum bias strip Lanvin by the departed Alber Elbaz on one of the guests today. A designer that still and cannot be replaced. #ladiesofmadisonavenue #classicstyle #ballet #newyorkcityballet #newyorkcity
