Today @thesandmanofficial is released on Netflix. #tomsturridge and I worked together intensively everyday for 3 months for him to embody #morpheus / #dream . We also worked out everyday throughout this 10 month shoot (originally it was scheduled for 6 months, but due to covid hiatus’ the production was extended). Throughout the first episode of The Sandman, Tom’s character Morpheus, has been captured and is imprisoned. Morpheus is completely naked throughout the entire first episode, apart from a few strategically placed shadows (hats off to the DOP). At our first meeting Tom came to me a showed me the iconic animated picture of his character (see picture above). He said ‘I need to look like this, it’s not you’re standard superhero physique, can you do it?’ I replied of course! Let’s do it. And off we went to work. Tom was supposed to shoot this episode for 4 weeks. What you don’t see is, covid hit the production few times and this 4 weeks quickly ballooned out to 12 weeks. Tom had to now maintain this lean, sinewy yet ripped physique for 12 Weeks! And he’s naked the entire time, so there’s nowhere to hide! But, as always, with every challenge that was presented to us, Tom stepped up and met it head on. I had him eating within an intermittent fasting window of only 4 hours a day. Tom’s training program included 2 hours of cardio and 1 hour or strength and conditioning training almost everyday (I incorporated a variety of modalities including pilates, weight lifting and kettle bells circuits). And then he would go off to work a 12-14hour day on camera. We started everyday at 4am. He never missed a day. Tom never complained, even in the depths of winter having had to do this for many months longer than originally planned. Tom just kept on turning up. And the results speak for themselves, congratulations #Tomsturridge and the team @thesandmanofficial . What a journey it was.
