Early on in life I learned that being high achieving kept me safe, secure, praised, and loved. The more science fairs and spelling bees I won, the more obvious it became.
By age 14, demonstrating my smarts got me out of a less-than-healthy childhood home situation and into college. Being in high achievement mode quite possibly saved my life.
Seriously.
But after a while, something happened that happens to most of us struggling with Perfectionism- I had too much on my plate and though I was handling it well on the outside, I started to notice that my work was too often accompanied by sometimes serious levels of anxiety and internal pressure. Like I could never do enough, or do it well enough.
Here are just a few signs that you may stuck in Perfectionism:
👉You’re often or chronically stressed or overwhelmed by a lengthy to-do list
👉You usually feel that you could/should be doing more
👉“Should,” while we’re at it, is an oft-repeated word in your vocabulary
👉You compare & despair
👉You struggle with anxiety
👉You’re on a perpetual quest for self-improvement
Sound familiar? 🖐
But why does this happen? Why do we end up stuck on an endless quest for perfection? Why do we feel we’re never doing enough?
Sometimes it’s because we get stuck in survival mode, fighting against scarcity for our lives - even when the danger is already gone. And the very thing that has kept us safe - Perfectionism - becomes the risk to our well-being.
The good news is that this isn’t just ‘who you are’ and there is a gentler path for yourself.
